Great word-of-mouth combined with a all-star cast, not to mention one of the smartest directors of the last decade, all helped to boost Inception to the top of this weekend’s box office. Leonardo DiCaprio received his highest opening weekend numbers to date with the film.
The other new release, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, failed to win over viewers and couldn’t even bring in $20 million. For a film that had a budget estimated at $150 million, the numbers are anything but promising.

1. Inception – $60.4 million 2. Despicable Me – $32.7 million 3. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – $17.3 million 4. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $13.5 million 5. Toy Story 3 – $11.7 million 6. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse wasn’t able to claim a second week atop the box office this weekend. The animated film, Despicable Me, took that honor with a very healthy $60+ million.
Predators did well with over $25 million, which was good enough for third place on the charts. Eclipse did have a smaller second week decrease than its predecessor, New Moon, so Summit will be happy about that. The Last Airbender and Grown Ups each reached the $100 million mark this weekend as well.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 7/09-7/11:
1. Despicable Me – $60.1 million 2. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $33.4 million 3. Predators – $25.3 million 4. Toy Story 3 – $22 million 5. The Last Airbender – $17.1 million 6. Grown Ups – $16.4 million 7. Knight & Day – $7.8 million 8. The Karate Kid – $5.7 million 9. The A-Team – $1.8 million 10. Cyrus – $1.3 million
