Christopher Nolan’s Inception marked its second week of box office glory this weekend. It managed to hold off newcomers, Salt and Ramona and Beezus.
Inception has already grossed over $140 million in just two weeks of release. Angelina Jolie’s Salt made a good showing as well coming in second with over $35 million.

Great word-of-mouth combined with a all-star cast, not to mention one of the smartest directors of the last decade, all helped to boost Inception to the top of this weekend’s box office. Leonardo DiCaprio received his highest opening weekend numbers to date with the film.
The other new release, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, failed to win over viewers and couldn’t even bring in $20 million. For a film that had a budget estimated at $150 million, the numbers are anything but promising.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 7/16-7/18:
1. Inception – $60.4 million 2. Despicable Me – $32.7 million 3. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – $17.3 million 4. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $13.5 million 5. Toy Story 3 – $11.7 million 6. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse wasn’t able to claim a second week atop the box office this weekend. The animated film, Despicable Me, took that honor with a very healthy $60+ million.
Predators did well with over $25 million, which was good enough for third place on the charts. Eclipse did have a smaller second week decrease than its predecessor, New Moon, so Summit will be happy about that. The Last Airbender and Grown Ups each reached the $100 million mark this weekend as well.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 7/09-7/11:
1. Despicable Me – $60.1 million 2. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $33.4 million 3. Predators – $25.3 million 4. Toy Story 3 – $22 million 5. The Last Airbender – $17.1 million 6. Even with two new well publicized films entering the race this weekend, it was last week’s reigning champ, Toy Story 3, that won the weekend.
Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups did remarkably well and would have topped the box office if it weren’t for the Pixar juggernaut of Toy Story. Tom Cruise’s Knight & Day was very disappointing and came in a distant third with $20 million.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 6/25-6/27:
1. Toy Story 3 – $59 million 2. Grown Ups – $41 million 3. Knight & Day – $20.5 million 4. The Karate Kid – $15.4 million 5. The A-Team – $6 million 6. Get Him to the Greek – $3 million 7. It’s no big surprise that Toy Story 3 reigned over this weekend’s box office. The Pixar classic brought in over $100 and bested its competitors by a whopping $70+ million.
The Karate Kid managed to bring in another $30, but did drop off almost 50% from last weekend’s fantastic opening. Jonah Hex bombed with only about $5 million in ticket sales. Twitter and various film reviews crucified the film every chance it got.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 6/18-6/20:

11-year-old Jaden Smith made a huge name for himself this weekend after his film, The Karate Kid, cleaned up and took top honors at the box office. It exceeded all predictions for its gross and looks to only build upon the good word-of-mouth.
The A-Team fell short of expectations, but still managed to bring in more than $25 million.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 6/11-6/13:
1. The Karate Kid – $56 million 2. The A-Team – $26 million 3. Shrek Forever After – $15.8 million 4. Get Him to the Greek – $10.1 million 5. Killers – $8.1 million 6. With four new films entering the race this weekend, it was a tight race at the top of the charts. However, none of the new entries could knock Shrek off of his post at the number one spot.
With all of the negative reviews Killers and Marmaduke have received, they still managed to bring in more than $10 million each. Get Him to the Greek has actually been receiving many positive reviews and that helped the film secure the second spot this weekend.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 6/04-6/06:
1. Shrek Ever After – $25.3 million 2. Get Him to the Greek – $17.4 million 3. Killers – $16.1 million 4. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – $13.9 million 5. Sex and the City 2 – $12.6 million 6. The fab 4 from Sex and the City 2 couldn’t grab the top spot this weekend and Prince of Persia is also not performing as well as hoped. Shrek managed to stay in the first position for a second weekend, even with a 38% drop in ticket sales from last week. The two new entries for the weekend may end up changing positions depending on any big swings in expectations for the remainder of Memorial Day weekend.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 5/28-5/30:
1. Shrek Forever After – $43.3 million 2. Sex and the City 2 – $32.1 million ($46.3 includes Thursday showings) 3. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – $30.1 million 4. Iron Man 2 – $16 million 5. Shrek Forever After managed to win this weekend’s box office race, but came in way below the opening of Shrek the Third. Below = more than $50 million less. Buzz hadn’t been very good for the last of the Shrek films, but it still has a built-in fan base that helped it achieve its $70+ million weekend.
MacGruber was a disappointment as well, not even being able to crack the top 5 this weekend. It still will probably recoup its $10 million budget, but the SNL history of sketches made into flopping films continues on.
Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 Box Office Estimates for 5/21-5/23:
1. Shrek – $71.2 million 2. Iron Man 2 – $26.6 million 3. Robin Hood – $18.7 million 4. Letters to Juliet – $9.1 million 5. Just Wright – $4.2 million 6. MacGruber – $ 4.1 million 7. Date Night – $2.8 million 8. A Nightmare on Elm Street – $2.2 million 9. How to Train Your Dragon – $1.8 million 10. Kites – $1 million
