Tonight it was time to see if the Top 12 guys had what it took to impress the American Idol viewers.
Overall, I was not thoroughly impressed. However, I will say that I was more entertained and had a better feeling about this group of singers compared to the ladies’ show last night. I will say, like I said about the girls, that I understand it’s the first live week, but c’mon on now.
Idol is now in its ninth season, which means that everyone out there knows what it takes to shine in this world of criticism and glory. The guys tried too hard in my opinion; there were lots of runs and trying to outshine the one before him. I did see a lot of potential though. I definitely didn’t feel that way last night with the Top 12 girls.
As a Chicagoan, I was happy to see that three of the contestants hailed from my area. I’m a fan of Lee Dewyze; he didn’t do exceptionally well tonight, but I love the raspy tone in his voice. I actually like John Park too; he’s got a real richness to his voice. But what the hell was he thinking with his song choice? “God Bless the Child” is a song that should be sung by women with that powerhouse vocal. I have a couple other guys that I will keep in the back of my mind (Casey James, Andrew Garcia) as could-be favorites.
Of course we have to discuss who I didn’t care for too. I can’t jump on the Aaron Kelly train. Sure, he’s got the David Archuletta thing going on, but he’s not a star. Alex Lambert can lose the wanna-be mullet any time now. I am not a fan of Michael Lynche either. While watching his performance, I felt like I was sitting in a hotel listening to the wedding singer.
Usually when the Top 24 gets narrowed down to the Top 12, that’s when things really start heating up. I’m really counting on that. In interviews, Simon Cowell has said he feels like this is the year for a female winner. I’m going to go out on a limb and disagree. I’ve got the next three months to change my mind.

I’m wondering if this is part of something he needs to do to rectify what happened with his wife over the holidays. Apparently, she is in rehab too. What a pair, right?
I wonder how that works for his show. I’ve heard that he will be taking a temporary leave – obviously necessary if he’s going to rehab – so how does that affect production on Two and a Half Men? Think his co-stars are supportive and that this is just another normal day to them? Of course, people want him to be healthy and well, but talk about ridiculous behavior. You have the #1 comedy on TV, you’re filthy rich and you still can’t get your life together. I’m not sure whether to feel bad for the guy or to say grow up.
I remember the days of The WB and the great dramas that began in the late 90′s: Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, Buffy and Gilmore Girls. Once The WB became extinct and morphed into The CW, many thought the dramas would fall by the wayside. There have been some successful dramas over the last few years: One Tree Hill, Supernatural and Smallville. However, with the addition of the popular new series The Vampire Diaries, many felt that The CW might finally be coming into its own.
This past January, The CW introduced a new show that has the heart and humor of The WB shows of past. The cast is great, the chemistry is there and the stories work. That is a great way to start out! The ratings are still struggling a bit, but I highly recommend this show to anyone who is/was a fan of the shows I mentioned earlier. One of the great things about the show too is that it’s not just a teen drama filled with teen angst. The relationships with the adults are just as intriguing, if not more so than the storylines surrounding the main character, played by Britt Robertson. Shiri Appleby, Kristoffer Polaha and Kerr Smith are no strangers to fans and they just mesh so well on this show.
If you haven’t had a chance to check this show out yet, please get to it. It airs Monday nights at 9/8c on The CW. You won’t be disappointed.
Oh ladies, why do you care so much about The Bachelor? I’ll admit that I watched the first few seasons of this ABC dating show. However, after the Trista/Ryan wedding hoopla, I figured enough was enough. Over the last few years I may have seen a handful of episodes, but really it’s just the same insanity with a different man or woman in the position of power. I have watched most of this season with Bachelor Jake though.
If you think about it, The Bachelor is kinda like dodgeball. In this case, Jake, picks his team and each week he hits someone with the ball and sends her out of the game and sometimes he even knocks more than one out at a time.
I think all reality programming is semi-successful because we love to see how people degrade themselves, act like a fool or get destroyed by someone else in a public forum. It really is sad, isn’t it? But at the same time, it’s pretty amusing. I’m guilty of watching shows because of what craziness I know is going to take place. (VH1′s Flavor of Love, anyone?)
Let us not forget one of the main reasons anyone signs up to be on TV though: to become famous! Every man, woman and child who has the opportunity to go on television thinks that this will be their one chance to make it. Here’s a clue for any dreamers out there: it is NOT going to happen. Sure, if you make it far enough, you might get your 15 minutes of fame, but that’s where the train ends.
Tonight is the always entertaining “Women Tell All” episode. This penultimate episode is usually filled with bitterness, tears and more ridiculous behavior. It is just so great to see a woman who was “kicked off the team” after the second episode want to get answers from the “team captain.” Really ladies?? You probably spent a total of about ten minutes talking to this man.
All reality shows are the complete opposite of what they state to be. There is almost nothing ‘real’ about these shows. There are story editors and producers that set up situations and editors who take footage and put it into a compelling TV show. I’ve heard many spoilers that Jake picks the unlikable Vienna on next week’s finale. I’d bet my blog that they are either not together anymore or if they are, they don’t make it another month. Pessimistic? No. Smart? Yes.
I’ve asked people on Twitter to suggest a topic for me to discuss on here and this is the first one! (Her question referred to shows such as Arrested Development, My Name is Earl, etc.)
That’s a really good question actually and I think it comes down to one thing: ratings. Shows CANNOT make money off of tv shows that are not bringing in viewers. Advertisers are not going to dole out money for commercials for a time slot that doesn’t have enough traffic coming through. For example, look at the Super Bowl. This past year, the going rate for ads were in the 2.8 million dollar range. Super Bowl Sunday is the most watched TV day of the year and advertisers know it! Even when shows such as Friends ended, the cost to air a commercial went up for their last show, knowing that it would be a highly watched program.
Take your example of Arrested Development, which was artistically and critically praised and had a stellar cast (Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnet, Michael Cera, David Cross). It was on FOX, on Sunday nights if I’m not mistaken, but did not bring in nearly as many viewers as shows in the same time slot on other networks.
The network higher-ups are so much quicker to pull a show that is not bringing in the numbers, hoping that they can replace it with one that can. In the last decade or so, networks seem to have ants in their pants if a show isn’t successful right out of the gate. There have been numerous shows in the last few years that have been yanked after only one episode. ONE EPISODE! (ex. NBC’s Quarterlife, FOX’s Osbournes: Reloaded)
Fans, like yourself, become outraged when a show they like/love gets pulled from the schedule. Most shows that have been on between 1-3 seasons and get taken off the air usually have a cult following as far as the fans go. Arrested Development is a perfect example of that. The show ended in 2006, but the popularity of the show and cast has never stopped. It has remained so popular that they are making it into a movie! Fan’s voices are important, even if things may not always work out that well.
There are some websites that even have “save a show” campaigns. Eonline is an example of that. Their TV diva, Kristin Dos Santos, has a blog specifically dedicated to TV shows and fans . She gets imput from her readers and promotes ways to help fans save their favorite shows. CBS’s Jericho is an example of how the dedication of the fans helped to save the show. They sent an enormous amount of peanuts to the head honchos (apparently peanuts had significance to the show) and the show ended up coming back for another season.
The system is not perfect by any means; sometimes all the cards just need to be in a row and have a little luck on their side.
Last night was the season premiere of Real Time with Bill Maher. I cannot express enough how much I love this show on HBO. First of all, Maher is a smart guy. He also happens to be very funny. His combination of smart talk and comedic chops make this show a gem.
Most of his guests are politically fueled, as his show. He throws in actors, authors and musicians to his panel as well. Maher’s skills plus the discussions from the panel aid in informative, intelligent news and communication.
Maher isn’t afraid to speak his mind and being on HBO gives him a great amount of freedom to say and do things his way. Not everyone is going to agree with him and some may not even like him very much, but you can’t take away from the forum he’s created for emotionally charged dialogue. His segment on “New Rules” is sharp and humorous. Whether I agree with them or not, the “Rules” always have me thinking as I laugh aloud.
For those who have a difficult time listening to politicians or understanding the world of politics, “Real Time” is a great alternative. This show is addictive and makes you want to be informed so you can keep up with the quick-witted banter among the host and guests.
